Music Theory · For every instrument

Music theory that makes everything click

Live music theory classes, on their own or alongside an instrument. Theory is what turns copying into understanding, and it is taught here with the instrument in hand, not from a textbook.

What your child learns

Inside the music theory course

Taught in the right order, one skill at a time, with live correction in every class.

Scales and keys

How scales are built, why keys matter, and how to find your way around them on any instrument.

Harmony and chords

Why some chords sound right together, and how songs move from one to the next.

Composition

Writing melodies and chord progressions of their own, from the first module.

Analysis

Listening to and taking apart real music, so new pieces make sense faster.

The 12-class module

How the course is built

Twelve classes, each building on the last, with one clear practice target to work on every week.

Who it’s for

Music Theory, ages 6 and up

  • Students of any instrument who want to understand what they play
  • Children working towards higher graded exams
  • Young songwriters

Not sure? The assessment class will tell you

Class length

Matched to age and goals. The instructor recommends one in the report.

Choose a class length to see who it suits

Short and focused. Young children learn best in short bursts, so every minute is spent playing.

Enough time to warm up, learn something new and play it through properly. The length most families choose.

Room for technique, repertoire and theory in one class. Best for older students and higher grades.

Questions

Music Theory questions

Does my child need theory if they only want to play?

A little, yes. Theory is woven into every instrument course here. A separate theory course is for students who want to go deeper, write their own music or sit theory exams.

Can theory be taken alongside an instrument?

Yes. Many students take theory classes next to guitar, piano or vocals.

Are there theory exams?

Yes. ABRSM and Trinity both offer graded theory exams, and higher instrument grades often ask for one.
