Getting started
What age can my child start?
From age 6. Classes are taught to students of all ages after that, from young children to adults, and the class length and pace are matched to the student.
Which instrument should my child learn?
The one they are curious about. If you’re not sure, book the assessment class and say so: the instructor will look at your child’s rhythm, pitch and coordination and recommend a starting point in the written report.
Do we need an instrument before we book?
No. The instructor will recommend the right instrument and size at the assessment class. You’ll need one before the course itself starts.
My child has tried lessons before and stopped. Will this be different?
Usually the reason was one of three: nobody corrected mistakes, the lessons had no order, or there was no way to see progress. Every class here is live, follows one structured curriculum, and is measured against graded exam standards.
How classes work
Why does it matter that every class is live?
Because the instructor sees and hears everything your child plays and corrects it in the moment, which is what makes the difference. Students in six countries learn this way.
What do we need for a class?
The instrument and a quiet corner to practice in. For classes on a screen, a laptop, tablet or phone with a camera and a steady connection; the instructor will help you set up the camera angle in the first class.
How are class times arranged across time zones?
You tell us the days and times that suit you, in your own time zone, and we match you with an instructor who can teach then. Classes run at a fixed weekly slot so practice becomes a habit.
How long is each class?
30, 45 or 60 minutes. As a rough guide: 30 minutes for ages 6–9, 45 minutes for ages 10–13, and 60 minutes for ages 14 and up or for students preparing for higher grades.
Courses and progress
Why are courses built in 12-class modules?
Twelve classes is long enough to build a real skill and short enough to keep a clear goal in sight. Each module has a plan, each class builds on the last, and at the end you can see exactly what changed.
How will I know my child is improving?
You get a written report after the assessment class, and regular written examiner feedback after that. Progress is measured against recognized graded standards, not guessed.
Can my child switch instruments?
Yes. If your child wants to try a different instrument, talk to us and we’ll arrange it. Much of what they have learned (rhythm, reading, theory) carries over.
How much practice is expected?
A little, often. Each class ends with one clear practice target for the week. Short, regular practice does far more than one long session.
Exams
Which exam boards do you prepare students for?
RSL, Trinity College London and ABRSM. Your child’s instructor will recommend the board that suits their instrument and style.
Does my child have to take exams?
No. Every student follows the graded pathway, but sitting the exam is your choice. Many students take them because a certificate is a clear, outside measure of progress.
How long does each grade take?
About a year per grade for most students with regular practice, though it varies with age, practice and the instrument.
The assessment class
What happens in the assessment class?
It’s a real 30-minute, 1-on-1 class with a certified instructor. Along the way the instructor checks your child’s readiness (focus, following instructions, working independently) and musical aptitude (rhythm, pitch, coordination).
You get a written report the same day, with a recommended starting point. It is yours to keep whether you enroll or not.
Is it a sales call?
No. It’s a real class with a real assessment. If your child isn’t ready yet, the report will say so.
Do I need to give payment details to book?
No. Nothing is collected to book the assessment class.
